Boo for Facebook’s New Emoji “Reactions”

February 24, 2016 by Rhys Ludlow

I was so excited to see that Facebook had decided that the “like” button was too limiting to express the proper sentiment we might have about any given post.

Today they have added a variety of reactions to assist us in expressing ourselves. I scanned through the available options:

  • Like
  • Love
  • Haha
  • Wow
  • Sad
  • Angry.

My first reaction was BOOOOO.  Because that’s what’s obviously missing – No “Boo” or “Hiss”. No “Thumbs Down”? No “Bronx Cheer”? Not even a friendly “Raspberry”?

What kind of Polyanna world do the folks at Facebook inhabit?  I know the weather is great in here in California and we have a tendency to political correctness but really? Are we not allowed to express disagreement (other than anger). Sometimes people post things and opinions (including videos) that just suck. You know I’m right.

I do not consider myself a curmudgeon. Well, not usually. But this is pretty over the top. At least limiting reactions to “like” was egalitarian. This omission of disliking something is simply ostrich-like.

My reaction ?

I agree with you Rhys, who decided on these emojis anyway? They certainly don’t even begin to register my range of emotions over the things I posted on Facebook.

I really want a dislike – or thumbs down- emoji. Or a “that’s stupid” or “Really??” emoji.
Maybe their next generation will be better for all of us.

    Thanks for this fun post!
